Briggswath

Village

Description

The village of Briggswath lies on the north side of the River Esk, opposite Sleights, and is named after one of the medieval bridges over the Esk. The village used to be part of the parish of Aislaby, which sits above it on the edge of the moors, but is now part of the parish of Eskdaleside-cum-Ugglebarnby, forming a small triangle of the parish on the north side of the Esk, while the bulk of the parish is on the south side (see parish map). The village contains a Wesleyan chapel built in 1820.
