Harwood Dale is a small village just inland from the coast, located in an area dominated by forestry. Harwood Dale Forest is just to the north of the village, while the steep hills to the south mark the northern end of the gigantic forest that stretches all the way to Thornton-le-Dale. The village sits in the shallow valley of Broadlands Beck, just above the valley the runs along the northern edge of the Tabular Hills. To the north west of the village is a ruined Jacobean chapel, built by Sir Thomas and Lady Hoby of Hackness (three miles to the south).
