Ellerburn is a tiny hamlet in the valley of Thornton Back, and can be reached along a footpath that runs north from Thornton-le-Dale. The same path continues along the valley, past a fish hatchery and into Dalby Forest.
The main feature of Ellerburn is the church of St Hilda. This early church has Anglo-Saxon elements, and includes a number of samples of Viking stone carving, amongst them a series of cross heads and a serpent sculpture.
