Now most famous as the filming location for 'Heartbeat', when I first encountered Goathland it was eerily deserted and shrouded in mist. My walk took me down into the surrounding valleys, where I encountered some of the nine local waterfalls, before crossing the open moorland back into the village. During the entire walk, I never met another person. Visit Goathland any summer day now, and you will have trouble imagining that the place could ever be quiet!
Goathland is unusual in several ways. The village stretches out for three quarters of a mile along a continuous village green, complete with wandering sheep. Unlike many moorland villages, Goathland does not shelter in a valley, but sits on a slight dip in the moors.
Goathland is on Ordnance Survey Explorer Map OL27 (North Yorks Moors Eastern Area)
