Lythe is the last village on the highground north of Whitby. East of the village the road heads down Lythe Bank into Sandsend. Lythe is a pleasant stone built village.
Just outside the village is Mulgrave Castle, the home of the Marquis of Normanby. The grounds are open to the public, although the best access is from Sandsend. The ruins of the original Mulgrave Castle can be found in the woods that surround the house.
