Whorlton

Village

Description

The main feature at Whorlton is the remains of the castle. The castle consists of an earthwork enclosure, with a fourteenth century stone gateway. The gateway is still largely intact, although roofless. The first documented mention of the castle occurred in 1214. During the fourteenth century it was held by the Darcy family, who also provided two constables of the Tower of London, as well as a series of Sheriffs of York. The ruins of the Church of the Holy Cross also also of interest.
